Destroying Procrastination: A Lesson in Choosing What Matters Most

,

Sometimes, the words we need to hear come from the most unexpected places. For me, it was a coworker’s honesty and a group chat message from my boss that completely changed how I look at my time, my passions, and even myself.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in a cycle of procrastination—knowing what you love to do but always finding a reason to put it off—this post is for you.

The Conversation That Changed Everything

About 2 weeks ago, a coworker and I were talking about the kinds of content I’d love to create for my blog and videos. I was sharing all my big ideas, the things that light me up, but then I said it:

“I just don’t have enough time to create that kind of content.”

She stopped me mid-sentence, looked me right in the eye, and said:

“You’re making excuses for yourself. You do have the time—you’re just not using it to do what brings you joy.”

Her words hit me harder than I expected because, deep down, I knew she was right. I thought about all the times I’d told myself I’d “do it later,” only for the day—or the week—to slip away. I realized I wasn’t just putting off content creation. I was putting off my joy.

A Powerful New Year’s Message

That same coworker and I are in a group chat with our boss. On New Year’s Eve, our boss sent us an uplifting message that included a powerful question:

“What will we be destroying in ourselves to be the best version of ourselves?”

I had seen the message earlier but hadn’t replied yet. After my conversation with my coworker, it finally hit me—I knew what I needed to destroy.

I typed out my response:

“I’m destroying the spirit of procrastination.”

What happened next surprised me. Both my boss and coworker responded, and we ended up having an inspiring conversation about what this meant. My boss shared how setting personal goals like this not only transforms your personal life but also flows into your professional life.

It made me realize how interconnected everything is. Procrastination wasn’t just keeping me from creating content—it was holding me back from becoming the best version of myself.

Why We Procrastinate

Procrastination often disguises itself as busyness or lack of time, but for me, it came down to fear:

• Fear of Failure: What if my content isn’t good enough?

• Fear of Success: What if it works, and I can’t keep up?

• Overwhelm: It’s easier to push things aside than to face the daunting task of starting.

But the truth is, procrastination robs us of the chance to grow, to create, and to experience the joy of doing what we love.

How I’m Destroying the Spirit of Procrastination

After reflecting on this, I decided it was time to take action. Here’s how I’m working to overcome procrastination and reclaim my time:

1. Being Honest About My Time:

I’m tracking how I spend my day to see where I lose time. Spoiler: a lot of it goes to mindless scrolling and unnecessary tasks.

2. Prioritizing What Brings Me Joy:

Instead of saying “I’ll do it later,” I’m scheduling time for my passions—like content creation—just like I would for any other important commitment.

3. Starting Small:

Procrastination often comes from feeling overwhelmed. I’m breaking down big goals into small, manageable steps:

• Writing for 15 minutes a day.

• Outlining one video idea at a time.

• Filming short clips instead of aiming for perfection.

4. Holding Myself Accountable:

That group chat conversation made me realize how powerful it is to have people who support and challenge you. I’m sharing my goals with trusted friends and coworkers so they can help keep me on track.

What This Means for You

If procrastination has been holding you back, I want you to know you’re not alone. Here are some questions to reflect on:

• What are you putting off that could bring you joy?

• Are you truly out of time, or are you prioritizing other things over what matters most?

• What’s one small step you can take today to start breaking free from procrastination?

Closing Thoughts

That New Year’s Eve message and my coworker’s honesty taught me something I’ll carry with me this year: We have the power to destroy the things that hold us back. Procrastination, self-doubt, fear—they don’t have to define us.

For me, this year is about choosing joy, taking action, and becoming the best version of myself. And it starts with making the most of the time I’ve been given.

What’s holding you back from doing what you love? What will you destroy in yourself this year to become your best self? Share your answer in the comments—I’d love to hear your story and cheer you on!
